Together We Rise: A Call for Unity in the Black Community

By Lucy Isaiah

As we approach Africa Day this May—a time for reflection, pride, and celebration of our heritage—let us also make a powerful commitment to unity and mutual support within the Black community.

Our journey through life is not a one-way street. It is not a single ticket, but a return ticket. And that return ticket is each other. We are our own safety net, our own community of healing, strength, and growth. When one of us stumbles, the rest must reach out—not with judgment, but with a helping hand. When one of us soars, let’s celebrate and lift them even higher.

Support your fellow Black brothers and sisters in their projects, events, achievements - and especially in their failures and mistakes. These are the moments where encouragement means the most. We must create platforms for one another, offer opportunities, mentorship, and the kind of love that heals and empowers.

Let us end the cycles of beefing, grief, jealousy, backstabbing, and the failure to patronize and uplift one another. These attitudes only serve to hold us back from the progress we so rightly deserve.

We must also commit to supporting Black businesses and reclaiming our economic power. Economic empowerment is community empowerment. When we circulate our wealth within, we strengthen our foundations and create long-term stability for generations to come.

Equally important is reclaiming the powerful narrative of “it takes a village to raise a child.” Our young people are not just our future - they are our present. We must support them at every stage of their development and challenges, equipping them with the life skills, mentorship, and encouragement they need to discover their hidden talents and creative abilities. This is how we raise strong leaders and champions of Black excellence.

Africa Day is not just a celebration of our continent’s past, but a reminder of our present power and future potential. Let’s use this month to ignite a new culture-one of collaboration, compassion, and collective success.

Change begins with us. For ourselves, for our families, and above all, for our community.

Together, we rise

A Note from African Authors:

"Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter." – Chinua Achebe

This reminds us of the importance of reclaiming our own stories, our own voices, and our own power. Let us be the authors of our narrative, the champions of our own history, and the builders of our future.

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." – African Proverb

In unity, we find strength. In togetherness, we build legacies. This Africa Month, let’s choose to go far-together
